This year’s fundraising exhibition in aid of WWF-Malaysia will run from 17 May – 31 May 2009 in the underground gallery at Rimbun Dahan.
‘The tropical rainforest presents an ideal of wild perfection whose luxuriant growth we could to emulate in our gardens. It provides the inspiration for the landscapes of our imagination. The height of towering trees, their natural spacing and the effect of irregular features like rocks and rivers feed the well-spring of illumination for artists and poets trying to recreate something of this natural wonder in their own idiom. Without having seen a forest, how could we understand the potential of the material we work with? Where do we stand when our tanah air ceases to exist?’

The exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and on weekdays by appointment.
There will be a curator’s talk at Rimbun Dahan Gallery 3 pm, Saturday, 23 May
Rimbun Dahan is one of my favorites places which combines nature, art and architecture and it’s just about 1 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.
Rimbun Dahan is a centre for developing traditional and contemporary art forms. It features buildings designed by Hijjas Kasturi, as well as a 19th century traditional Malay house, in an indigenous garden environment.
Please note that Rimbun Dahan is a private property. It is open to the public for limited hours only during exhibitions.

Kuching is a perfect destination for a traveller to start exploring Sarawak in Borneo, especially if you travel with children and are aware of responsible travel.
Kuching is a nice town offering a wide range of good museum – maybe among the best in Malaysia -, nice heritage buildings from the 19th century, wide and safe sidewalks that allow you to discover the place slowly – everything is at a walking distance – and the best sunset I have ever seen in Malaysia
Nature and wilderness – proboscis monkeys, orang-outan, turtles,birds, big spiders..- are easily accessible at less than one hour, as well as nice and quiet beaches. And no leeches waiting for your blood, that’s great!
The place offers also many opportunities to learn about the indigenous communities of Sarawak.

When asked 15 years ago about conservation efforts of historic Georgetown , Salma Khoo, director of Areca Books – a heritage and historical books publisher based in Penang – would answer, “What really matters to Penangites is food; they simply take their heritage for granted”.
In July 2008, international recognition was given to Penang when George Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; completely transforming local perception. Melaka (Malacca) and George Town (GT) are jointly inscribed on the list as “The Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca [where] the influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the towns with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia. Both towns bear testimony to a living multi-cultural heritage and tradition of Asia, where the many religions and cultures met and coexisted”.
This recognition is an essential milestone for the handful of Penangites who have strived for years for the preservation of the tangible and intangible heritage of GT. Read the rest of this entry »
THE LIGHT SHOW 2009, Light Sculpture Exhibition

The Light Show 2009 presents an assortment of lights and light installations made from recycled/found objects to humour, cajole and inspire.
Inspired and motivated by their respective interests and disciplines, the participants of TLS09 are bound by the commitment to be “greener” and kinder to our environment. And who says green can’t be beautiful?
From PET bottles to milk cartons, plastic shopping bags to drinking straws, phased out incandescent light bulbs to old-skool cola bottles, these everyday materials have been rescued, re-used and re-imagined as light sculptures inspired by marine life-forms, whimsical one-off items, useful objects and many more.

At the finale of the Stylo Kuala Lumpur Fashion Festival held last week, the designer Edric Ong was accorded the Mercedes Benz Stylo Award for Heritage for his collection and designs that best reflects the cultural heritage of Malaysia.
Edric Ong has been promoting Sarawak indigenous craft with the Atelier for over twenty years. He uses natural fibers and natural dyes in his fashion collections and works closely with some skillful craft persons from the Iban community.
