THE LIGHT SHOW 2009, Light Sculpture Exhibition
Thu 16 Apr to Sun 3 May, 11am to 7pm at The Annexe Gallery
The Light Show 2009 presents an assortment of lights and light installations made from recycled/found objects to humour, cajole and inspire.
Inspired and motivated by their respective interests and disciplines, the participants of TLS09 are bound by the commitment to be “greener” and kinder to our environment. And who says green can’t be beautiful?
From PET bottles to milk cartons, plastic shopping bags to drinking straws, phased out incandescent light bulbs to old-skool cola bottles, these everyday materials have been rescued, re-used and re-imagined as light sculptures inspired by marine life-forms, whimsical one-off items, useful objects and many more.

At the finale of the Stylo Kuala Lumpur Fashion Festival held last week, the designer Edric Ong was accorded the Mercedes Benz Stylo Award for Heritage for his collection and designs that best reflects the cultural heritage of Malaysia.
Edric Ong has been promoting Sarawak indigenous craft with the Atelier for over twenty years. He uses natural fibers and natural dyes in his fashion collections and works closely with some skillful craft persons from the Iban community. Who are they and what they do
Outskirt Outreach (OO) is a social organization located in Ipoh, Perak. Run by volunteers, OO’s objectives are to highlight and help the hidden indigenous communities of Perak and contribute to the local rural economy.“Since we know a bit about the nice places around Ipoh, we figured we could raise funds by organising trips for visitors who want an insider’s account. Who are they and what they do
Reita Faida Rahim, started Gerai OA in October 2004. She is currently the leader of the volunteer group but she prefers to be considered the coordinator.
Gerai OA defines itself as a “nomadic volunteer-run stall which sells handicraft made by Orang Asal (or Orang Asli), the indigenous minorities of Malaysia”. They are not a business, not an NGO, just a volunteer group.
Their main objective is to preserve the indigenous minorities’ craft heritage by helping them to find and develop a sustainable market for their crafts. They only facilitate the sale of the craft and encourage the indigenous communities to develop their own businesses.
